Joncels is a medieval village built
around a bénédictine
abbey and of its abbey strengthened, Saint-Pierre aux liens,
who, would be the oldest monastery of the area (VIIe century).
Independent until 909, it was attached to the abbey of Psalmodi
located in Gard. Under the protection of the
Bishop of Lodève,
saint Fulcran, it knew a great prosperity with 28 churches under
its dependence.
In 1361, the Pope Urbain V attached it to
the abbey Saint Victor of Marseilles.
It has been only for a few years that
the medieval village of Joncels left its fortifications, and if
one builds now in his surroundings, air photograph makes
it possible to follow the well defined layout of the old city girdled
formerly of ramparts. It is also noticed that the Bénédictine
Abbey was a fortress inside the fortified town.
For the pilgrims, Joncels remains a halt on the way of Saint Jacques
de Compostelle.
The
bénédictines
Abbeys an abbey is a community
(men or women) which devotes its life to the prayer, isolated of
the rest of the world. It is known as bénédictine
when the monks observe the rule of Saint Benoit de Nursie. This
rule compels the monks with the reading and work.
